Forstner Bit |
This set includes three shanks, and a bunch of different interchangeable Forstner bit heads that screw into the shanks. Seems like a lot of trouble and expense to avoid having a fixed shank on every head. |
The most I’ve ever used a forstner bit at one time was to drill 124 holes, each 3-1/2 in diameter, to create the compartments under each tile in my wooden periodic table table. |
I love my Forstner bit set so much. It was pretty expensive. |
A variation adds a tapered screw tip, which causes the bit to pull itself into the wood. This sometimes lets you use the bit hand-held, as long as you and/or your power drill are strong enough to keep the bit going at the rate dictated by the screw thread. |

Forstner bits are ideal for making big holes in wood using a drill press. Just don’t try to use them with a hand-held drill or they will run all over the place. |
