Thread cutting on small diameter pipes or rods can be done with a die wrench similar to a tap wrench. |

Tapping Die Wrench |
Tapping in the home shop is almost always done by hand. The machines to do automatic power tapping are quite complex. |
Tiny tap wrenches for tiny taps! |
A simple step up from manual tapping is to use a hand tapping machine. It simply holds the tap in a perfectly vertical position to avoid drunken threads. |
If you need a custom length of iron pipe for a plumbing job, you have to cut and thread it yourself (or find a pipe supplier who does it). This long-handled ratchet die set works on pipes up to 2” in diameter. |
Alternately you can use a pipe threading machine like this, which rotates the pipe against a stationary die. |
