These mini bolt cutters, only 8-inchs (200mm) long are getting into the range where perhaps a good pair of diagonal cutters would do just as well. But the compound leverage does give them an advantage. |
This pickle slicer cuts in the other direction: lengthwise. |
Another one of Nick’s overpriced tools, these Knipex bolt cutters use an unusual form of hinge to create a lot of leverage without a second (compound) joint. They claim to be able to cut up to ¼ inch (6mm) steel, but are far too expensive to actually use, so I don’t know if this is true. |
This dehorner—a tool for cutting the horns off cattle and goats—has a beautiful double-double gear drive to slide the guillotine-like blade down. |
This odd tool looks like a normal bolt cutter with a pair of what are described in sober military procurement documents as “groping hooks”. The handles are fiberglass and insulated up to 5000 volts, because the tool is meant for grabbing, pulling, and cutting electrified razor wire (Concertina wire). If you want to break into a secure military facility, this tool could come in handy. |
This chain cutter is also basically a wire cutter, except the wire in this case is the steel bar from which chain links have been formed. It came from right next to the wire rope cutter on the left, and cut chain for customers. |
Cigar Cutter |
Elaborate cigar cutters chop off the ends of cancer sticks, I guess so you can inhale the toxic chemicals more efficiently? |
Bolt cutters are handy for cutting locks off of warehouse doors so you can sneak in at 3am to steal buckets full of rare beanie babies, or whatever people steal these days. Folding handles make these easier to conceal under your trenchcoat. |
The gear drive on this dehorner gives you greater leverage when the tool is fully open, letting you start the cut with maximum force. As the gear tapers and the driving gears get bigger to follow it, leverage decreases and the blade moves faster. |
These tools don’t actually cut all the way through: they just crack the shell of an egg, then split it or lift the top off. |
Egg Topper |
Small, 1-foot (300mm) bolt cutters still pack a punch. |
These bolt cutters with two-foot (600mm) handles are still pretty capable. |
