These inside micrometers violate a key rule of micrometer design by having caliper-like jaws. They have to be very carefully made to avoid slop. |

The dial on this go/no go micrometer can indicate a deviation of up to +/- 1/1000 of an inch. The divisions on the scale are ten thousandths. Obviously it is intended for checking fairly tight-tolerance parts. |
You might think this tool is used to measure round rods, and I suppose it could be, but the main purpose is to measure fluted cutting tools with odd numbers of cutting blades, which can’t be measured across their diameter. A certain amount of math is required to interpret the readings. |
Pointy-headed micrometers can measure inside groves or indentations. You have to be more careful to be consistent and not apply too much pressure, because you can easily introduce error, or damage the workpiece, if the points sink in. That’s why normal micrometers have flat faces. |
This model can be used to measure the wall thickness of pipe: The anvil is round so it will touch only one point on the inside of the pipe. |
Blade micrometers also work to measure inside groves. Unlike other shapes, the spindle on a blade micrometer must not rotate, which complicates the internal design. |

These heavy blocks of precision steel can be set very precisely in the metrology room, and then sent out to the factory floor to do their job of criticizing people or machines that don’t make parts accurately enough. |

Disk micrometers are used to measure tooth spacing of gears, and other situations where you need to reach just a little way in. Technically they violate the principle of keeping the measuring surfaces in line with the screw, but only by a tiny bit. |
