Gear pullers are like presses in reverse: they pull instead of pushing. To get a stubborn gear or pulley off its shaft, you hook the three jaws around the outside of the gear, then tighten the rod in the center against the shaft. Keep tightening and with luck the shaft will be pushed through the hole in the gear.
